Why is blues cathartic? Because the bed upon which the solo lies is a 7th chord, which is the causal chord of potentiality and includes the never resolving tri-tone, or "Devil's interval". Over the 7th chords, guitarists play the sad b3 and start bending and playing the "mini notes" or "notes in between the notes" from the b3 up toward the 3, so you get all the shades of going from sad to happy...... Minor blues is taking a minor sub key and applying the structure of blues....... but in regular blues, it is the 5 mini-tones between the b3 and the 3 and the 4 and the b5 when the "shades of blues" or the blend between happiness and sadness are explored.
